Critical Literacy-COM 4623

Critical Literacy is an instructional approach that advocates the adoption of critical perspectives toward text. Critical literacy encourages readers to actively analyze texts and it offers strategies for uncovering underlying messages. There are several different theoretical perspectives on critical literacy that have produced different pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning. All of these approaches share the basic premise that literacy requires the literate consumers of text to adopt a critical and questioning approach.

In my opinion, this subject given me opportunity to voice out loud regarding my opinion and perception. I can blow whistled on and comment about anything that come out. I am experienced to be senator, panelist and be presenter on viva presentation. Hopefully, after this I can experience it once again.

This article is written by Mr. Kamaraziz and reveal the real the matter between smoker and cigarette. Firstly, I  did not understand the content of this article but after get the explanation from Mr.Kamaraziz I am go through all the content of the article. The cigarette been introduced as Alfred, Benson, Lucky. In this article Mr.Kamaraziz tell us his experienced of being smoker during his childhood.

The sentences that shows about cigarette:

The Influence of Heredity on the Malay Race

I am interested to read Dr.Mahathir's excerpt because it involves of Malay's attitude. I am as Malay want to reveal the truth about Malays. The poor performance of Malays because many factors that contributed such as Malays do not believed with inter-marriage, married in early age and involves with abhor.

The Malays are among the few people whose race is legally defined.
Thus, the Malaysian Constitution states that a Malay is one who habitually speaks Malay, professes the religion of Islam and practices Malay customs. There is nothing said about the definitive culture of the Malays. It follows that changes in culture do not make a Malay person a non-Malay. Culture is made up largely of the value systems accepted, even if not actually practiced by a people or a race. Observations have shown that the culture of a people determines whether they are successful or they fail.

Animal Farm-Film Review

Animal Farm is good story written by George Orwell. This story symbolize of relationship between animal. It showed the way animal communicate each others. Viva Presentation

Despite everything is over but I am very interesting with viva presentation because it encourage me to deserve a good level confident during present and the best thing during question and answering section. I am spend the last two night to make a preparation before do viva. I am as well made a consultation with our beloved lecturer, Mr. Kamaraziz,  he showed and make the correction with our article. 

During the viva presentation, I am interested with Fatin Farhana's group because they showed the best performance and give good explanation.

Islamophobia

Islamophobia is prejudice against, or an irrational fear of Islam or Muslim. This term had been using  back to the late 1980s. Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should look into his own backyard at how the minority Malaysian Indians and the non-Malays suffer from Islamophobia through BTN, Jakim, Rela, the judiciary, Perkasa and practically every organ of the government institution against the minorities in Malaysia. 

In my opinion, women Muslims are suffered from Islamophobia because of they are seeing a rising tide of hostility and abuse because of the way they dress. 

Julius Ceaser

The real name of Julius Ceaser is Gaius Julius Ceaser. He was a Roman general and statesman. He plays a critical role in the gradual transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.
In my opinion, he is a person who had authority to control his country. He had his own capability to overmaster his own agenda. 

Syllogism

A syllogism or a logical appeal is a kind of logical argument in which one proposition is inferred from two others of a certain form.
Syllogisms are arguments that take several parts, typically with two statements which are assumed to be true (or premises) that lead to a conclusion. This takes the general form:
Major premise: A general statement.
Minor premise: A specific statement.
Conclusion: based on the two premises. There are three major types of syllogism:
Conditional syllogism: If A is true then B is true (If A then B).
Categorical syllogism: If A is in C then B is in C.
Disjunctive syllogism: If A is true, then B is false (A or B).
Also of note for syllogisms is:
Categorical propositions: Statements about categories.
Enthymeme: a syllogism with an incomplete argument.
Modus Ponens: If X is true then Y is true. X is true. Therefore Y is true.
Modus Tollens: If X is true then Y is true. Y is false. Therefore X is false.
Set Theory: The basics of overlapping groups.

Example of syllogism:
The president should be intelligent
The president should be articulate
Therefore: George W was taken out by a pretzel.

Euphemistic Language

 Definition of Euphemistic:

Euphemism is a substitution for an expression that may offend or suggest something unpleasant to the receiver, using instead an agreeable or less offensive expression. The purpose of using euphemistic language is avoid revealing a secret sacred names to the uninitiated.

Noam Chomsky said: 

In Today's uncertain world you cannot reveal to much of yourself...or they will crucify you....

The example of euphemistic language:
"I'm waxed clean--hairless as the day I was born. But don't say "Tia has no pubic hair". That's so clinical. We should use a nice euphemism. Say "She's moved her secret garden" or "She's cleared the way to the Promised Land"

Superstitions is a credulous belief and do not based on reason or knowledge.

Some leads to belief but some may not belief it because they are live among different type of culture, value and norms.

It is also commonly applied to beliefs and practices surrounding luck, spiritual and the irrational belief that future events can be foretold by specific unrelated prior events.

Example of superstition:

Chinese's superstition 

• Car number plates containing the number 8 (examples would be 8888, 888, 88, 8, 168, 668) are a sign of good fortune ( the Cantonese pronunciation for 8 is"baat" which sounds similar to "fatt" which means prosperity.)
•  The Chinese also have many superstitions concerning pregnancy such as the emotional state of pregnat women is important. They should stay happy as much as possible. It is believed whatever affects a mother's mind will also affect the baby. 
• It is important to have the house completely clean before New's York for good luck in the coming year.
• Red and yellow are the color of good fortune accept by all, while black is a color of bad luck.
• It is best to wear red coming into the new year, as it is considered to be the color that bring the most luck.

In my opinion superstitions are something happened since you, as a human and it is come out with different type of superstitions and everyone had their own perspective towards it. Some people may accept in their life but some others people are unbeliever about superstitions.
